A New You

 

Listen up!  You want to “cure” Diabetes, get rid of bad Cholesterol, get that Blood Pressure down, and lose that extra weight around your waist?  Here’s the secret. 

There is no Secret

Eating a balanced diet consisting of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans will be effective.   You can eat those same foods for each of these conditions as well as to strengthened your brain power, to help reduce your chances of cancer and to help you live a longer healthier life.  Throw in the requisite persistent (60 minutes), consistent (4-5 days a week) exercise, and get 7-8 hours of restful sleep every night and that should do the trick.

So why is there always some new book on the market or new celebrity “expert” telling you that there is something very special you can do to make your high Blood Pressure go down, or your Diabetes disappear, and your Cholesterol go away?  

You can purchase their book or DVD, or their “products” because that’s what you want to hear isn’t it?   Wouldn’t it be nice if there really was some thing out there that could make us all healthy?   Maybe there is, but I for one haven’t found it as yet.  For now I am convinced that it isn’t out there.

Starting All Over Again

 

A new year is another new chance. 

We can each start once again in our efforts to become better. 

We can renew our efforts to eat the right foods and to get an adequate amount of exercise. 

We can also endeavor to stay informed about the things happening in the world that effect our health and well-being now as well as those that will effect future generations. 

We can vow to be better friends, neighbors, sisters, brothers, sons, and daughters. 

We can plan to smile more and to generously give of ourselves to those who have less than we do. 

We can start by wishing as individuals for the discipline to achieve all our goals. 

A great New Year would be one in which in addition to becoming the best individual person, we all work together for peace and harmony in our own home, our neighborhood, our city, and on and on until it spreads like sunshine all over the planet. 

That would be a Happy New Year, this time for real!

Take a Deep Breathe

Breathe.  Give yourself just a few minutes to be still and breathe.  Think only about the flow of your breath passing gently in and out past your nostrils.

Allow the breath to come in deeply, filling the small crevices of your chest where your lungs hadn't been allowed to spread.

Allow your belly to round out as your lungs expand downward.  Take in a full deep breath.  Breathe in deeply and let it flow out.

Release it all.  Don't hold on to any of it.  Let it go.  Feel what that does to your body.  Feel the muscles begin to relax.

With each breath let go of the tension in the muscles of your face, the muscles of your shoulders, your arms, hands, thighs, legs, feet.

Let the breath flow to these areas and let it take away all the tension you've been holding there.

Let your breath relax you.

Let your breath relieve you for one moment, this moment, of all your worries.  Let them flow out with your breath.

Breathe in calmness and experience relaxation.

In this moment feel peacefulness.  Experience it with your breath.

Your gentle breath can take away your tension and bring you peace in this moment.

Breathe in peace and let it be yours now.
